The term ‘natural’ in skincare will mean different things to different people.
At one end of the spectrum stands the more purist organic cosmetic formulator, who understands this definition to mean that cosmetic ingredients are picked directly from a plant and have undergone no or minimal chemical processing.
At the other end of the spectrum stands the more pragmatic organic cosmetic formulator, who wants to use emulsifiers, preservatives, surfactants, chelators, solubilisers and other functional ingredients to create the types of products that many consumers want to buy – lotions, creams, serums, foaming products and gels. These functional ingredients will need to undergo a degree of chemical processing before they can be used.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to defining the word 'natural' and that is why Formula Botanica caters for both definitions of natural. We welcome both types of formulators in our community.
The first episode of our Green Beauty Conversations podcast discusses this topic.
